Insurance
Without insurance, therapy is $160 per session here at Mercy River Counseling, however, many health insurance plans do cover therapy. Each of our therapists accepts different insurance plans, including:
Blue Cross Blue Shield
Blue Care Network
Priority Health
If you have healthcare insurance through one of these providers, you may qualify for mental health coverage. To find out about your specific coverages, check your plan for “behavioral mental health” benefits.
Not all health insurance policies provide the same mental health coverages, so it is important for you to verify the details of your individual policy in order to understand the cost of therapy for you.
We recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your benefits:
- Does my health insurance plan include mental health benefits?
- Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet?
- Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit?
- Do I need written approval from my primary care physician in order for services to be covered?
Why can’t I use insurance for my couples’ therapy sessions?
Typically, when couples seek relationship counseling, they are seeking help with intimacy, communication, or general interpersonal struggles between one another. Because of this, there is typically no defined mental health diagnosis made by the couple’s clinician.
Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis called the “primary presenting concern” when determining whether or not to cover therapy. This does not typically apply to couples’ counseling, and when it might, it requires the therapist to label one “identified patient” within the relationship. Labeling one “identified patient” (while sometimes impossible anyways), can create an unwanted dynamic between the therapist and the clients, or between both partners in the relationship.
This imbalance is due to the idea that one partner can be viewed as the “problem” within the treatment plan. At Mercy River Counseling, we believe that this diminishes the effectiveness with which we can support your therapy journey as a couple.
Knowingly creating and sustaining this imbalance is in direct opposition to both the philosophy of Mercy River Counseling, and the ethical code for marriage and family therapists cited by the AAMFT. For this reason, the providers here at MRC are unable to bill couples’ counseling through your insurance, and in turn, all couples’ counseling services are self-pay.
